How to study and get your license

Intro

Although no license is required to listen to amateur radio or even purchase a Ham Radio, you will need a license before you transmit on any Amateur band. Being prepared and studying diligently is key to successfully passing the amateur radio license test. This post I will outline a step-by-step approach to studying, preparation, and testing. Along with a few resources to help you along the way

Step One: Study

The first step in obtaining an amateur radio license is to understand the different requirements of the classes of licenses. The exams are stacked, in that you have to start with Technician, then take the General and finally the Amateur Extra. Each level builds on the knowledge of the previous level and gets harder as you progress. Although you must pass each test in order, you are allowed to take all three exams back to back in a single test session. In fact most Volunteer Exam Coordinators will suggest you take the next test for free should you pass the initial test you signed up for.

Study Resources

The test questions are standardized and are published, no tricks here. This means the pool from which your questions on the exam will come from is defined in advance. Making flash cards or other study materials such as books, online resources, and practice exams would be ideal. I would recommend two resources:

Ham Study is an exam practice site that is free and funded from sales at Signal Stuff, makers of some great HT antenna’sand other equipment. Ham Study has the entire pool of questions for all levels. Some one with a good memory could leverage the practice exam mode and quickly memorize the answers well enough to pass the Technicians test easily in a couple of days.

However for the more advanced tests (or for all of them) I would recommend using Ham Radio Prep. It is a for pay service but you do get a lot more. Each test level has content and videos covering the relevant materials on the test. Also they point out technical “gotcha’s” or questions that most people miss. The courses are broken up into separate sessions that makes it easy to consume. Finally, as you take practice exams, the system will point out area’s to work on and tell you when your ready to sit for the real exam. Its worth the money hands down. 1

I would be remise if I didn’t mention that there are various books available that cover the theory and regulations relevant to the specific license levels.

Step Two: Make Time & Practice

Designing a study schedule is the next crucial step. Determine how much time you can dedicate to studying each day or week and be consistent. Break down the subject matter into smaller sections and allocate specific study time for each topic. It is recommended to dedicate extra time to areas that are more challenging or less familiar.

Understanding the underlying principles and concepts is vital, so actively engage with the study material. Take comprehensive notes, create flashcards, and organize information in a way that is easy to review. Consider forming a study group with fellow enthusiasts, as discussing complex ideas with others can enhance understanding and retention.

Practice exams are invaluable tools for gauging your knowledge and identifying areas that require further attention. These exams replicate the actual test environment and help familiarize you with the types of questions you might encounter. Continuously review and repeat practice exams until you consistently achieve satisfactory scores.

Step Three Take the Test

Once you feel confident in your knowledge and have consistently performed well on practice exams, you are ready for the official test. Find a local testing session through the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). There should be local test sessions available, if not look into online test sessions2 or other authorized testing organizations. Arrive early and ensure you have all the necessary identification and paperwork. Remain calm, read questions carefully, and rely on the knowledge you have acquired during your diligent preparation.

FCC Registration

Its advisable prior to taking your test that you register with the FCC and get your FCC Cores account created. Guidance on registering is available at the FCC CORES Registration website.

After successfully passing the amateur radio license test, celebrate your achievement and join the vibrant community of radio enthusiasts. Continue to learn and expand your knowledge through practical experience, talking to experienced operators, and participating in activities. As you gain more expertise, consider pursuing higher license levels to unlock additional privileges and deepen your understanding of radio communication.

  1. I have not been paid by Ham Radio Prep, nor have I received a discount for using their service. I paid for my subscription using my own funds. I have used their service and passed my Generals exam and looking forward to doing the same from my Extra exam ↩︎

  2. Online test sessions may require additional hardware like additional web cams etc. Please check with the requirements from the test provider before scheduling an exam ↩︎
